I arrived home today to find the pungent aroma of hops on my doorstep. My first shipment of the 2008 crop of hops arrived from Freshops. I got 5.5 pounds of hops – two pounds of Zeus (another trade name for Columbus:), two pounds of Nugget, .5 pounds of Magnum, .5 pounds of Sterling and .5 pounds of organic New Zealand Hallertauer hops. When I opened the box, the aroma of the Nuggets exploded into the room. I have another 5 or so pounds en route from Hops Direct that should arrive any day. Once they show up, I’ll be spending some quality time with my vacuum sealer, making sure that these fresh hops stay fresh for the 2009 brewing season.

I really like both of the hop suppliers mentioned above and I buy from both of them every year. Freshops is a tad bit more expensive, but they always have a better selection than Hops Direct. Hops Direct is a couple bucks a pound cheaper, and they tend to pack up “heavy” pounds for shipment, that run about 18-20 ounces:)

Probably the biggest disappointment for me this year is that neither of these suppliers has any Summit hops – my new find of the year last season. I still have some Summits from last year, but I was hoping to pick up some new cop Summits.
