Today’s Teach a Friend to Brew Day event was successful in several ways. First and foremost, it was a wonder social event – many good (old) friends, some good (new) friends (I got to meet some local Twitter folks – Hi @AlexisDias !) and many friends of friends. Homebrewing just seems to attract high quality people. It’s one of my favorite things about the hobby:)

Between Brad and I, we brewed 20 gallons of ale, 10 of my annual TAFTBD IPA, and 10 of Brad’s German Hefeweizen. My brew day went well, short of forgetting to add clarifier and yeast nutrient (I get distracted with so many fun people around:), and the IPA has been put to bed for a nice cozy fermentation. Everything else aside, we made beer!

Most importantly, I think we may have picked up as many as four new homebrewers out of the event! The Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day event is all about showing people how easy it is to brew great beer, showcasing the ales you’ve brewed and lighting the burner under new brewers. I think we did that today:)

A Photo Gallery has been posted of the day’s activities for your viewing pleasure.

I’ll have coffee and morning munchies early in the day, as well as sausages (John has offered to be the event’s GrillMaster:) and lunch munchies in the afternoon. Additionally, attendees will have full run of the 8 ales I have on tap throughout the day:) We should be done around 3:00 p.m. My best guess is that there will be about fifteen attendees.

I finally kegged up a bunch of ales last Thursday. It was really windy and I dislike kegging in the wind, but I had no choice as I needed to clear some space on the bar for two social events. I kegged up ten gallons of Old Man Bitter, ten gallons of Teach a Friend to Brew Day IPA and five gallons of Strong Golden Showers Belgian strong ale. The bitter and the IPA are now on tap, and still a bit cloudy from the suspended yeast, but they should clear in the next week or so. The Belgian will need several weeks (or months?) of lagering to get the yeast to drop, but ‘m in no hurry to get it on tap until later this summer. Both the Old Man Bitter and the Teach a Friend to Brew Day IPA attenuated out far more than I anticipated. The IPA had an original gravity of 1.076 and went down to 1.015, for a 8.05% ABV. While the ale is still a bit green, it has a pronounced alcohol taste that should mellow over time as the ale ages a bit. It has a wonderful hop nose and a nice biscuity malt taste from the Victory malt.

The Old Man Bitter has an overwhelming alcohol taste, that I’m really hoping will mellow with time. It had an original gravity of 1.064 and went all the way down to 1.005! It is incredibly dry tasting, with an alcohol wallop from the 7.75% ABV. So much for brewing a session Extra Special Bitter. If the attenuation calculator in Beer Tools is to be believed, the apparent attenuation was just a bit over 92%! The White Labs Premium Bitter Ale yeast, WLP026, went crazy. I dry hopped the bitter with an ounce of East Kent Goldings for a bit more aroma, but right now the alcohol is overshadowing everything in this ale. I can only hope this bitter mellows over the next couple months…
